2008 NOCA Academy


The NOCA Academy is pleased present its topics for the first half of the 2008 seminar series. The focus of each webinar is “hands-on” training on practical subjects relevant to the credentialing professional. Each webinar offers participants new skills and techniques applicable to certification programs in various industries.

Each webinar will be presented via a web-based tool with an audio component as well. Sessions typically run between 1 and 2 hours and can be attended from your office. Should there be several people in your office interested in participating in a seminar, only one registration form is required. All seminars begin at 1:00 pm ET.

Public Member Roles & Responsibilities
Speakers: Cynthia Miller Murphy, MSN, RN, CAE, Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation and Rebecca LeBuhn, Citizen Advocacy Center


This webinar will define the role of the public member(s) on certifying boards, describe the value, contributions, and benefits of public members to certifying boards, identify strategies for identifying and recruiting candidates for public member positions and provide tips for creating conditions to help public members to be effective. Our speaker, Cynthia Miller Murphy, is the Executive Director of the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. She also is the President of the NOCA Board of Directors and is a former NCCA Commissioner. She is the author of the Public Member Chapter of the soon to be released 2nd edition of Certification: A NOCA Handbook.

How to Develop an Effective Government Relations Strategy
Speakers: Frank Moore and Stacey Moye, SmithBucklin Government Relations


Does your organization have a government relations program?  If a central aspect of your organization’s reason for being involves an activity that is regulated in any way by the government, you should consider creating one. NOCA’s Government Relations team, Frank Moore and Stacey Moye, will discuss the reasons why a robust government relations program can be an essential element of your group’s mission.  Different types of programs, from legislative and regulatory monitoring to direct advocacy, political involvement, presence-building, will be discussed. The seminar will end with a brief overview of the electoral landscape for November.

Continuing Competence Workshop


A Continuing Competence workshop will be held at the Citizen Advocacy Center’ s (CAC) office building located at 1400 16th St. NW - Suite #101, in the first floor conference room. It will begin at 9:30 am on Monday, May 12, 2008, and end at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. Box lunches each day are included in the $295.00 registration fee.

The workshop will explore in depth the efficacy of various methodologies for assessing and demonstrating the current competence of health care professionals, including...

  • Written or oral exams;
  • Peer review;
  • "360" reviews;
  • Consumer satisfaction surveys;
  • Self-reflection leading to self-directed learning portfolios;
  • Evaluation by "standardized patients";
  • On-site practice review;
  • Simulation;
  • Self-Assessment.

An expert faculty will examine actual experience with and potential applicability of each of these methodologies, taking into consideration that they are...

  • Administratively feasible;
  • Publicly credible;
  • Professionally acceptable;
  • Legally defensible;
  • Economically affordable.

Call for Content: Write for the NOCA News


NOCA is currently accepting content for the Summer 2008 issue of NOCA News, our quarterly publication that we are pleased to offer to the entire certification community.  Each edition is emailed to over 3,500 NOCA contacts and is available to anyone who visits us at www.noca.org.  Writing for NOCA News is your chance to reach thousands of colleagues within the field of professional certification!   

Articles that will be selected must complement NOCA’s mission and goals and be relevant to the certification industry.  Please submit your contact information, a first draft of your article, and your target audience for consideration to Danielle Danko at ddanko@smithbucklin.comArticles should be submitted to NOCA by Wednesday, May 14th to be considered for the Summer Issue of NOCA News.
